چکیده
Lexical Simplification is the task of reducing the lexical complexity of textual documents by replacing difficult words with easier to read (or understand) expressions while preserving the original meaning. The development of robust pipelined multilingual architectures able to adapt to new languages is of paramount importance in lexical simplification. This paper describes and evaluates a modular hybrid linguistic-statistical Lexical Simplifier that deals with the four major Ibero-Romance Languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and Galician. The architecture of the system is the same for the four languages addressed, only the language resources used during simplification are lan-

An Open-Source Shallow-Transfer Machine Translation Engine for the Romance Languages of Spain
We present the current status of development of an open-source shallow-transfer machine translation engine for the Romance languages of Spain (the main ones being Spanish, Catalan and Galician) as part of a larger government-funded project which includes non-Romance languages such as Basque and involving both universities and linguistic technology companies. The machine translation architecture...
متن کاملOn the Romance Languages Mutual Intelligibility
We propose a method for computing the similarity of natural languages and for clustering them based on their lexical similarity. Our study provides evidence to be used in the investigation of the written intelligibility, i.e., the ability of people writing in different languages to understand one another without prior knowledge of foreign languages. We account for etymons and cognates, we quant...
متن کاملStructural and lexical factors in adjective placement in complex noun phrases across Romance languages
One of the most common features across all known languages is their variability in word order. We show that differences in the prenominal and postnominal placement of adjectives in the noun phrase across five main Romance languages is not only subject to heaviness effects, as previously reported, but also to subtler structural interactions among dependencies that are better explained as effects...
متن کاملThe Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension
The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three...
متن کاملCausativity Expression and Cross-linguistic Variation of Resultative Constructions
This paper aims to propose a new account for the cross-linguistic variation of resultative constructions in natural languages. Specifically, I shall show why certain languages like English have the typical resultatives while others like Romance languages or Japanese systemically miss them. I shall first review Washio’s (1996, 1997) typological pattern for resultative constructions as well as th...
